Today I am a conscientious, calm and professional leader and Father with a full enhanced DBS with experience working as a Health and Wellbeing Advisor and Mental Health First Aid Instructor with experience in a large acute NHS Trust. I am motivated, organised and efficient individual with an interest and passion for Workplace Wellbeing and extensive experience in administration and secretarial roles.
But my journey here was a difficult and winding path.
My Mum was an alcoholic (although today we would describe this as Alcohol Dependant) and I was a sole carer until her death when I was 13 (in 2003). After struggling with Anxiety and Depression for many years, in June 2015 I tried to kill myself. I want to tell my story because suicide, not cancer or car accidents, is the biggest killer of men in the UK (aged under 50, ONS) and more teenagers are self-harming than ever before. Staying silent isn't solving the problem but talking openly and honestly, is the only safe and constructive way to dismantle stigma and help others seek the help they need.
The main causes for my suicide attempt was stress and workload at work, since we had lost several members of staff without them being replaced, but the trigger was an incident at work which out of context seems quite minor.
Mental ill health is responsible for 72 million working days lost and costs the UK businesses over £45 billion each year.
As of 2026. I've now delivered training to over has taught over 500 people using my lived experience and journey to steer and influence my career and the support I provide. My current diagnoses are Borderline Personality Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder and IBS. This training includes the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) 2 day course which guides you to identify, understand and support someone who may be experiencing poor mental health such as Stress or Anxiety. The training also includes vital structure and support to help someone during a mental health crisis, including suicide behaviours and psychosis.
As a pro-active member of my community, I am Chairman of a local non-profit community group and Co-Chair/Trustee of the Iver Heath Village Hall charity. I hold a full UK driving license and a clean enhanced DBS.
In the decade following my suicide attempt I have been a Media Volunteer for Mind and written for The Huffington Post, the CALM charity website. My story was featured in an article in The Guardian newspaper. I've appeared on Sky News, BBC Two LBC and talkRadio. I've also been a shortlister for the Mind Media Awards (2016 to 2019).
